Overview
A powerful SUV in its class
FJ Cruiser has the most attractive features for off-road cruising in its class. It has imbibed a lot of features from its lineage, the FJ Cruiser has no serious looks but performance is great. The FJ has been a successful land cruiser and good selling off-road runner for more than two decades.

The early FJ and Land Cruisers were World War II jeeps for the US Army and the newer version participated in the Korean Conflict. Most of the design cues like the white top, round headlamps, Toyota on the hood, windshield are carryovers from the FJ.

The 2007 FJ Cruiser has a potent 4-liter DOHC VVT-i V6 engine that is the most powerful in its class and pumps out 239 hp and 278 lb-ft. of torque.

The SUV offers quality safety features as standard and a choice of AWD, 2WD, manual, automatic, hi and low transmission with an attractive sticker price.

It is the powerful in comparison with the popular Hummer 3, Nissan Xterra and the Jeep Wranglers and comes with a basic warranty of 36 months or 36,000 miles.

Engine and Performance
Best power to weight ratio
The FJ Cruiser has a powerful engine. The power delivered is more than its potent competitor Hummer H3. It makes 239 horsepower and generates 278 lb-ft of torque. The total weight of the SUV is 4295 pounds, which makes the power to weight ratio of the vehicle more than the Hummer.

The FJ is good on mileage considering the weight of the SUV. It makes 17/21 mpg (city/highway) and receives the LEV-II rating from the federal government.

The FJ has a full-time 4X4 drive coupled by a 6-speed manual transmission with clutchless driving. The high range and the low range gear systems helps in steep crawling and descending. The raised ground clearance and computer controlled traction A-TRAC (Active-TRACtion) eases tough terrain driving.

Walk-around
Styling received from its predecessors
Designed on the lines of the FJ-40 and the Toyota 4Runner, it still looks like its predecessors. The square honey-comb grille has the 'Toyota' emblem embossed on it other than the usual logo. Circular headlights stand next to the grille. A huge black bumper with silver trims on it gives that defensive feel, the white top, black bumpers fenders and wheel wells leave the appearance of the car wanting.

The long wheel base and short overhangs give it a nice turning radius and great approach and departure angles.

The upright windshield and small windows reflect Hummer’s styling. But the distinctive features is the doors, it looks like a two door SUV but has two small ones which open in the opposite direction. The roof rack and the spare tire on the rear door save inner space.

Standard features with the FJ include front dependent dual access panels, full-size spare tire, SBRP265/70R17 BSW, mud and snow tires, exterior rear mounted tire carrier, steel wheels, power window lockout/override, rear intermittent window wiper/washer, flip-up liftgate window, dual silver manually adjustable exterior rearview mirrors, power windows with driver one-touch up and one-touch down, rear window defroster, rear green tinted glass, front dual sunvisors, variable intermittent windshield wipers, front and rear black bumpers, skid plates located on engine, fuel tank and transfer case, rear black step up bumper, front and rear mud guards, metallic paint (if selected), and wheel flares.

Comfort, Controls & Convenience
Functional interiors
The interior is as functional as the exterior, with no flashy or cozy work. The dash and the door panel have the body color trim that looks a little odd.

Seats are comfortable and firm but no leather upholsteries are offered as easy to wash fabric is offered for the rugged drives. The rear seats split into 60/40 making more space for the cargo. The gauges and controls create no confusion and are just right.

The navigation system can be pulled out from the car for direction during tracking and hiking. The FJs rear view is hampered as the C-pillar is wide, but that is not a big problem as the car is more for off-road than for city drives.

The standard audio system in the FJ includes a CD player, iPod, and MP3 with two ceiling-mounted speakers designed to enhance the sound experience within the FJ Cruiser.

Standard features inside the FJ include AM/FM Radio with 6 speakers total, CD player, radio antenna, manual air conditioning, silver and body color located on instrument panel, gray rubber floor covering located in passenger cabin, and cargo area.
