Overview
Small car for large expectations
Toyota presents Yaris, the long awaited fuel efficient car with a low sticker price. It is true value for the price tag and for the same reason it was amongst the best selling cars in Europe.

The Yaris is sporty in style, peppy in city, and innocent on the highways. It is available in three trims: Hatch, Sedan, and S Sedan. As the name suggests, these trims incorporate two different body styles.

The Yaris hatchback and the subcompact sedan share the same 1.5 liter engine and have an array of features to offer. The seats are designed to adjust according to the desired comfort. The interior and dash have been designed separately for both the models.

The Yaris comes as a replacement for the Toyota “Echos”. It offers a basic warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles.

Engine and Performance
Plenty of power for its weight
The Yaris fleet comes with a 1.5- liter DOHC 16-valve In-line 4 VVT-i engine. It generates 106 hp and 103 lb-ft. of torque. Power is transmitted through a standard 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive and an optional four-speed electronically controlled automatic overdrive transmission is available.

The Yaris is fuel efficient and when coupled with the manual gearbox it makes 34/40 mpg (city/highway). The automatic also makes almost the same distance of 34/39 mpg (city/highway).

Walk-around
Gorgeous looks
The Yaris is small, cute, and sporty. It has a distinctive design with a forward-leaning cue. In the US, Yaris hatch is sold with three doors inclusive of the rear liftgate and the Yaris sedan has four doors.

The Yaris hatch is curvy and stout with the uniquely designed window sloping forward. The black trimmed B-pillar blends with the tinted windows, making the window panel look like it is a single piece. The wheel wells accommodate the 14-inch tires well. The wraparound taillight is another unique design element with three sharp corners and the fourth is rounded.

The frontal of the Hatch trim is where the design team has worked a lot on. The large wedge-shaped headlights, which extend from the bumper to the windshield, incorporate the turn-lamps. The crease on the hood extends till the bumper that holds the wing shaped grille.

The Sedan and S Sedan trims also share a similar designing palette. The wing shaped grille has fins with the Toyota badge on it. The crease on the hood extends till the bumper which has a huge airdam making the bumper look small. The vibrant design makes the Yaris a gorgeous model in its segment.

Standard features include the SBRP175/65R14 All-season tires, compact spare tire, steel wheels, dual color-keyed manually adjustable exterior rearview mirrors, driver and passenger vanity mirror, tinted glass, infrared glass, intermittent windshield wipers, and front and rear bumpers.

Comfort, Controls & Convenience
Comfortable and quality interiors
The all new Yaris has comfortable seating and upscale upholstery. The dash of the sedan and the hatch differ in styling. It is to keep the exterior styling in sync with the interior.

The gauge panel is located on the centre console, a new concept to reduce the driver’s distraction.

The cabin is quite spacious with comfortable head room. The rear legroom can be a bit cramped for a 6-footer. The seats are upright and adjustable with classy fabric. The sedan's front seats also feature a height adjustment feature, which helps the driver find a more comfortable position.

Cargo space in the hatchback with the seats upright is 12.8 cubic feet; the sedan's cargo volume is 12.9 cubic feet.

Standard features include radio antenna, manual air conditioning, and carpet located in passenger cabin.

Driving Impressions
Good for city traffic and highway cruising
Yaris is the apt choice for those looking for an entry-level car with entry-level features and plenty of power for its weight.

Though it has rear drum brakes, it has a good halting distance. Various types of anti-noise materials have been used in the construction of this rigid structure. Slight vibrations and road noise can be felt in the cabin.

The shifting is flawless, smooth, and properly placed, delivering power in the entire rev line. The 4-speed automatic presents the first gated shifter in its class. It has a good response and reduces weight of the car considerably. The car is good at city traffic and highway cruising, but it is certainly not a sprinting boy.

An Independent McPherson strut front suspension is one of the best, but the torsion beam rear suspension with front stabilizer bar is compromised leading to an overall stiff suspension for a comfortable long drive.

Safety
Small car with plenty of safety features
A small car does not mean less safety. The Yaris has plenty of safety features like the front seatbelt pre-tensioners, plus three-point seatbelts, head restraints for all five passengers, dual-stage driver, and front passenger airbags. An anti-lock braking system (ABS) is optional for all trims.

Other standard features include front passenger and rear automatic locking retractors, driver airbag with dual stage deployment, passenger airbag cutoff sensor activated by weight, passenger airbag with dual stage deployment, front and rear crumple zones, front and rear outboard 3-point seatbelts, front pre-tensioners with force limiters, and side impact door beams.
