Redesigned Full-Size Pickup With Comfortable Ride

The 2022 Toyota Tundra received an impressive redesign with two powertrain options, an attractive exterior, and a plethora of high-tech interior features. What hasn’t changed is the respectable towing and payload capacity, as Toyota upgraded the suspension to a refined coil-spring rear suspension after years of a leaf-spring configuration.

Fuel-Efficient Powertrain Unlike The Competitors

The 2022 Toyota Tundra performance features vary dramatically from the competitors’ full-size pickup trucks. Toyota is the only automaker that does not offer a full-size truck with a V8 engine. Instead, Toyota outfits the Tundra with two fuel-efficient powertrains. The first is a standard i-FORCE twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 with 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. Tundra trims come standard with rear-wheel drive, and several models have four-wheel drive as an optional or standard feature.

The other is the i-FORCE MAX V6 engine paired with an electric motor for 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. The mild-hybrid powertrain is quick off the line and moves smoothly between the electric motor and internal combustion engine. The mild-hybrid delivers an EPA-estimated fuel rating of 20/24 MPG, while the four-wheel-drive model with the twin-turbo V6 gets an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 18/20 MPG. Both powertrains have a 10-speed automatic transmission. Drivers can add the i-FORCE MAX hybrid engine to all trims.

Towing And Payload Capacity

Despite not having a V8 engine, the Tundra has an impressive maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds when properly equipped. The Tundra Tow Package includes features like tow mirrors, a wiring harness with a 7-pin connector, a class IV towing hitch receiver, TOW/HAUL driving modes, load-leveling rear height control air suspension, Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control, and more.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra towing capacity depends on the cab, bed, and drivetrain. The rear-wheel-drive Tundra models can tow more than the models outfitted with four-wheel drive. For the most towing capability, choose a Double Cab model with a 6.5-foot bed and rear-wheel drive. At a minimum, the Tundra can tow 8,300 pounds and haul 1,575 pounds.

The Tundra SR trim is the best for towing, as it’s the only trim that comes with the Double Cab. The TRD Pro has the lowest towing rating, as it’s only available with the CrewMax Cab and is outfitted for off-roading with its off-road suspension, Fox shocks, crawl control, and locking rear differential.
